sustainability Policy

the issue

The climate emergency is the most pressing issue affecting us all, and our advertising industry can play a huge role in driving positive change. We want to help our industry deliver on its full potential to support businesses and people to deal with this emergency and build a more sustainable future. The climate emergency is a global matter, and as a global industry, we need global solutions.

The advertising industry’s drive to reduce the carbon impact of developing, producing and running advertising to real net zero by 2030 is spearheaded by Ad Net Zero and AdGreen. It is crucial that we work together to continue the momentum.

what we’re doing about it

  • we measure

  • we have switched to green energy suppliers

  • we reduce emissions as far as possible

  • we offset what we can’t reduce

  • we commit to zero waste/zero carbon production

  • we follow AdGreen, Ad Net Zero, and team up with other like minded companies

1. measure

We use AdGreen or Albert to measure our production footprint, and appoint a sustainability co-ordinator on each shoot who is responsible for filling in and monitoring our use.

2. green energy

At Luke Jackson we are passionate about cleaner energy and we have put our money where our mouth is. Not only using 100% renewable energy at home and in the office, we’ve invested into a number of companies who we believe are making a difference.

  • Carnot -reduce global CO2 emissions by 13% to accelerate the world's transition to net-zero and bring clean, secure and affordable energy to all. Carnot plans to achieve this by developing ultra-efficient hydrogen combustion engines built from advanced technical ceramics.

  • Salinity Solutions - 80% of the world's wastewater is released untreated. Water Treatment uses 284 TWh annually. Salinity Solutions’ patent pending product purifies wastewater & separates valuable minerals (eg lithium), using 50% less energy than conventional systems.

  • The Elcano Challenge - To sail around the world in a fully electric boat. This challenge was conceived by the famous Jimmy Cornell, a man that has been pivotal in the sailing community for more than 40 years. With climate change as an ever-increasing threat we owe it to the planet and to our future to undertake ventures such as this to show it can be done and to get these ideas mainstream.

3. Reducing emmissions

Reducing emissions can be achieved in a number of ways, but most significantly focusing in several key areas:

  • Transport -not just reducing air travel for crew and people, but also product and using more sustainable transport and carriers.

  • Places -reducing power usage for filming and non filming, and of course where possible using renewable energy to fuel them.

  • Materials -we try to reduce printing, use and source sustainable materials for prop builds, wardrobe, as well as reusing or repurposing where possible.

  • Waste -recycling, composting, reuse and of course using ethical waste disposal outfits.

4. offsetting

Where we can’t reduce or reuse we offset. Our preferred solution is to plant trees, seagrass and mangrove habitats as well as removing plastics from the sea. We do this by adding an optional 1% margin on all our estimates and if you are comfortable with that we will donate it to the following projects.

You may have noticed a slight bias towards the marine environment? Well that’s no coincidence. I’m passionate about our oceans; as a sailor, diver, swimmer and (in a previous life) water sports instructor, and also as an Edinburgh Uni ecology graduate, these issues are particularly close to my heart.

  • Plant a Mangrove -Planting mangrove trees has a huge impact. They store carbon, clean water and protect coastlines. They also provide a unique habitat, and are a vital and well known nursery for many species, including numerous larger coastal and pelagic species like sharks, dugongs, turtles. Each mangrove tree planted achieves the same positive results as planting 4-10 normal trees.

  • Plastic -Every year, millions of tons of plastic enter the oceans, of which the majority spills out from rivers. A portion of this plastic travels to ocean garbage patches, where it gets caught in a vortex of circulating currents alongside plastic from other sources (e.g. offshore fishing activities). If no action is taken, plastic will increasingly impact our ecosystems, health, and economies.

  • Ecologi -Recommended by AdGreen and a one stop shop for offsetting carbon. We have donated here to a number of causes and through Ecologi you can fund a range of different projects around the world.

  • Project Seagrass -Seagrasses occupy 0.1% of the seafloor, yet are responsible for 11% of the organic carbon buried in the ocean. Seagrass meadows, mangroves and coastal wetlands capture carbon at a rate greater than that of tropical forests. However, while this is in my opinion is a crucial habitat to protect and reintroduce, it does not yet have offsetting credentials. Yet.

  • Trees -training communities on sustainable land use so that they can grow vibrant economies, thriving food systems, and a healthier planet.

  • Alternatively let us know how or where you would like us to spend your donation, and we will!

5. commit to zero

We commit to zero carbon production by 2030, inline with the global requirement to reduce emissions and continue to focus on the industry guidance on how we can best achieve this.

6. RESPECTEd companies & FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Reaching our targets means we have to rely on our clients, partners and suppliers. While we listen to and follow the industry bodies like AdGreen and Ad Net Zero, we must also find ways to encourage best practice upwards and downwards in the production chain. We communicate our green credentials with our clients, and follow their lead. However, we do not compromise on our standards and ensure that our suppliers maintain the highest standards.

7. feedback loops

In order to improve our policy we encourage feedback. Please let us know what we are doing right, wrong, and where we can improve.
